1SCHOOL INTRODUCTION

North Shore International Academy (NSIA) is the largest Culinary and Hospitality training provider in New Zealand. Founded in 2001, NSIA has achieved the Training Excellence Award at the New Zealand National Culinary Fare competition for 8 consecutive years and the only private training establishment to compete and win awards in the Nestle Toque d'Or competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016. NSIA has been awarded Category 1 Provider status showing that NZQA is highly confident in the educational performance and in the capability in self-assessment and is a part of New Education Group. 3COURSE INTRODUCTION

NSIA offers Cookery Courses, Baking Courses, Hospitality Courses and ESOL Training Schemes.

Cookery Courses

• NZ Certificate in Cookery - Level 4

The course will give you the practical experience and skills you need to either study at a higher level, or work in a range of culinary environments. 

• NZ Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) (Cookery Strand) - Level 5

This programme expands on the Level 4 Certificate and will provide you with increased capability in advanced culinary techniques.

• Diploma in Culinary Arts - Level 5

The programme will provide you with advanced culinary skills and management skills with knowledge to an applied level in a range of advanced culinary disciplines, including cold larder and hot kitchen work, food and beverage management, human resource management, team leadership, menu and kitchen design.

• City & Guilds

City & Guilds qualifications are recognised around the world in more than 100 countries. They are seen as the leading qualification in Hospitality and Culinary Arts trades and are a preferred qualification within the industry.

Baking Courses

• NZ Certificate in Baking (Generalist) - Level 4

Students will learn both the practical knowledge and theory behind working in a commercial bakery including practical skills such as creating speciality breads and doughs, as well as a variety of sweets. Students will also learn about bakery science and quality management, safe food practices and workplace safety, workplace interactions and standard operating procedures in a bakery.

• NZ Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) (Patisserie Strand) - Level 5

This programme expands on the Level 4 Certificate and will provide students with increased capability in advanced patisserie techniques. It is also ideal for those with some experience in baking, who have gained the basic skills to go straight to diploma level.

• Diploma in Baking and Patisserie - Level 5

The first year of the programme is made up of the New Zealand Certificate in Baking (Generalist) (Level 4). The second year of the programme is made up of the New Zealand Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) (Patisserie Strand) (Level 5).

Hospitality Courses

• NZ Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Restaurant Services and Barista) - Level 3

Students will master the fine art of coffee and cocktail making, learn about restaurant service and food safety and pick up a host of other practical hospitality skills. And students will come away with a Level 3 certificate and a Certificate of Achievement in Basic Food Safety.

• NZ Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Restaurant Services) - Level 4

NZMA is now offering their Hospitality courses at NSIA. Liquor legislation, wine evaluation, food and beverage matching and advanced food safety. It’s all covered in this certificate. Students will even gain their LCQ (Liquor License Qualification), which will give them the leading edge when they are job hunting.

• NZ Diploma in Hospitality Management - Level 5

This programme aims to produce graduates ready to step into roles in a junior/entry-level management or supervisory level within the hospitality industry.

• Diploma in International Hospitality Management - Level 5

This programme aims to produce graduates ready to step into roles in a junior/entry-level management or supervisory level within the hospitality industry.

ESOL Training Schemes

• Elementary ESOL Training Scheme

The course is for people wishing to build on basic literacy skills in English and improve fluency and comprehension. It will allow students to converse with minimal autonomy in everyday, basic situations.

• Pre-Intermediate ESOL Training Scheme

The course is aimed to expand on previous basic knowledge to allow students to function with some independence in daily situations. Students will gain the ability to deal with certain unforeseen scenarios in conversation.

• Intermediate ESOL Training Scheme

The purpose of the Intermediate ESOL Training Scheme is to provide individuals with the language skills to be able to deal with most situations with some degree of spontaneity and fluency.

• Exam Preparation ESOL Training Scheme

The purpose of the course is to provide individuals wishing to gain entry into tertiary education the skills needed to pass an IELTS test or other similar English proficiency test.
