School Introduction

The University of Canterbury is a prestigious destination that is ranked in the world’s top 250 universities. It has also been awarded a 5-Star QS ranking for internationally renowned research and teaching.

The University of Canterbury was established in 1873 and is Aotearoa New Zealand’s second oldest university. Since its establishment, UC has produced graduates who have gone on to become world leaders in their fields. UC is committed to continuing this tradition of excellence and to developing tomorrow’s leaders.

UC is ranked in the top 1% of world universities (QS World University Rankings) and has 15 subjects ranked in the world’s top 200. UC was the first university in Aotearoa New Zealand to receive a five-star rating from QS.

UC International College (UCIC) at Canterbury

UCIC was established following a collaborative agreement between Navitas Limited and the University of Canterbury in 2013. The pathway programme is the first of its kind in New Zealand and designed to assist international students to better adapt to the challenges of living and studying in a new country and in a second language. UCIC assists its students to achieve their educational goals through personalised support and the opportunity to study at one of New Zealand's premier universities.

School Curriculum

This course is available to students from all disciplines and will help you learn critical thinking, academic reading, writing and research skills while discovering all the facilities the University of Canterbury has to offer.

UC Pathways is a project unique to New Zealand in adding an additional level of coordinated support for students. UC used international research to design a structure that is most likely to improve your success and enhance your experience at University.

UC Pathways intentionally builds a solid foundation of skills, attributes and social networks necessary for success in later levels of degree study.

School Facilities

UCIC’s students enjoy full access to University of Canterbury facilities and services and feel like a UC student from the moment they arrive on campus. By choosing to study at UCIC, students undertake a programme that is moderated by the University of Canterbury to ensure the highest academic quality.

UCIC students can:

● access University facilities and services including libraries, computer laboratories (some open 24/7), recreation facilities, on-campus accommodation, health services and career services

● be part of a diverse and vibrant student population, with international students representing over 60 countries

● have access to more than 120 clubs on campus covering sporting, recreational, academic and cultural events and activities

● be given academic and personal support to reach goals

● learn in small classes, complemented by small group tutorials and workshops

● receive extra academic contact to fully develop understanding of each course

● experience exceptional standards of teaching, with courses that are delivered by highly qualified academics.

School Location

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. The Christchurch urban area lies on the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula. It is home to 396,700 residents, making it New Zealand's third-most populous city behind Auckland and Wellington. Christchurch is the second largest manufacturing centre in New Zealand behind Auckland. It has an international airport, and it’s about ten-minute drive to the UC campus.
