Established in 1918, Chilton Saint James School is a world-class private girls’ day school from Years 1 to 13. The School also operate a co-educational Preschool at campus on Waterloo Road. Chilton students are prepared in a seamless programme that begins from Preschool throughout Primary School and then onto Senior School – all based on one campus. Chilton is an Independent school, affiliated with the Anglican Church. Chilton welcome students from all faiths and aim to teach respect for one another’s religious traditions.
There were four Houses in Chilton. With small class sizes and plenty of study choices. The School aims to give every student a broad, well-balanced education which is commensurate with her ability, reflects the essential learning areas and skills and provides a foundation for students to continue their education beyond school.

Chilton also prided in its performing arts. The School has a Dance Centre, Ballet Academy and Music School, which allows students to maximize the amount of time spent in practicing without neglecting their academic studies. There were also CSJ Drama Centre, Music groups, Golf Academy along with other extracurricular active groups, providing various choices for students with different interests.
Chilton Saint James School is a member of WPEN – Wellington Private Education Network that was formed between three top Wellington schools. Chilton Saint James School, Samuel Marsden Karori and Scots College work together to provide a strong programme study and pastoral programme for international students. Chilton Saint James is a safe school where girls are cared for on a daily basis.

Places at other year levels are also available. Students can enter the Cambridge International Assessment Examinations system from Year 10-13
Chilton offers the IB (PYP) programme from Preschool (age 3) – Year 6. In years 7 – 11 Learning Skills programmes are offered to selected students to focus on improving literacy, numeracy skills, as well as study skills. Students in the CIE system will find lots of flexibility and every timetable is catered to the individual needs of the student.
From 2018, Cambridge International Examinations will be available for all new students in Years 10 & 11. AS Levels will follow in 2019 for Year 12, with A Levels in 2020 for Year 13. By 2020, Chilton Saint James School will offer a full Cambridge Curriculum from Years 10 – 13.
NCEA system was still offered to existing students currently undertaking NCEA Level 1 in 2017.
In 2015, Years 10 – 13 students achieved great results in NCEA. There were 100% pass rate, 39.1% passed with Excellence and a further 39.1% passed with Merit for a total of 78.2% overall endorsement in NCEA Level 1; 100% pass rate, 33.3% passed with an Excellence and a further 51.3% passed with Merit for a total of 84.6% overall endorsement in Level 2; 91.9% pass rate and all of those who passed also gained University Entrance. 29.4% passed with Excellence and a further 50% with Merit in Level 3. In addition, Chilton also achieved 5 scholarships in Art History, Dance, French, and English (2 scholarships).
Chilton Saint James School is situated in Lower Hutt, a suburb of Wellington. The school is on Waterloo Road surrounded by private homes of high quality. Chilton is encased in beautiful trees and gardens that provide a backdrop for the 100-year old main building that our founder Geraldine FitzGerald provided.
Lower Hutt has a good supply of shops, medical facilities and such amenities as a hairdresser, dentist and bookshops. The local mall is three blocks away from the school and is within walking distance.Whilst the school is nestled in a suburb, the centre of Wellington is only a 10-minute train ride away. Wellington is a very safe city with a beautiful waterfront and many cultural and sporting attractions.
Technology is a priority at Chilton with projectors in all classrooms, interactive whiteboards in every Primary School classroom, school-wide WiFi, and access to eight computer labs for students.
The School will continue to provide pods of ipads for use by Preschool through to Year 5, and Year 5 to Year 13 may bring their own laptop computer. It has ultrafast broadband allowing students to access School emails, files and resources via the web at School or from home.
The School has excellent facilities with art rooms, library, playing fields, a 25m outdoor swimming pool, a sports field, tennis / netball courts, gymnasium and a well-equipped fitness training facility.
